Microsoft’s plans might sound crazy to most, and at first glance it’s easy to come to that conclusion, but the company argues it’s a matter of moving its free web apps to mobile. “It’s an extension of the strategy that we’ve got,” explains Microsoft’s head of Office marketing Michael Atalla. “It’s not a total strategic shift, as much of an extension of the existing strategy.” Microsoft offers free Office apps online, and Atalla argues that recent development model changes inside Microsoft have allowed the company to open up editing functionality to mobile clients. “We’re taking that same user experience we provide online to the native apps of iOS and Android. We want to make sure that our customers can be productive across all the devices they have.”

“With over a billion Office customers worldwide, and over 40 million downloads
on the iPad, it’s clear that Office applications are what people want to use
to get things done.”

If you need more editing options (and the included online storage), you can purchase an Office 365 subscription. This subscription is paid monthly, and it includes the ability to use the full Microsoft Office suite of apps on one PC or Mac, one tablet, and one phone (for the Personal subscription). There are also other subscriptions available if you need to run the apps on more devices.

If you’ve previously purchased a subscription and need to restore it to a new device, you can do that from this screen as well by tapping the Restore Previous Purchase link on the bottom of the screen.

However, the core Office experience, which until now has been tightly
contained within Microsoft’s paywall, will now be available on almost any
tablet or smartphone for free.

The number of registered enterprise developers was also reported to be up 39 percent year over year, nearly double the overall 20 percent growth rate among new third party developers that Apple reported for the year.

And rather than cannibalizing its Mac sales to achieve this, iPads appear to have helped Apple to expand its Mac sales via a halo effect, attracting new customers to OS X via iOS, a practice Apple is doubling down on with new Continuity features in its upcoming OS releases.

The three apps no longer require a Office 365 subscription to edit files. Previously you could only view files without such a subscription. Basic editing functionality and other features are now free. More advanced options, such as formatting changes, are still available only for Office 365 subscribers.

China’s app stores are notorious for two things: pirated apps, and huge amounts of malware. It’s a particular problem for smartphones running Google’s Android OS, especially because the official Google Play app store is not available in China. In its place hundreds of third-party app stores have sprung up, some from major tech companies like Baidu and Tencent, along with many others from smaller companies. A study last year of the twenty biggest global Android app stores found over 7,000 dangerous malware-carrying apps (pdf) on offer, most of them in China.

Microsoft Word for the iPhone.

But with Windows Phone on just 2.5 percent of the mobile devices worldwide and with iOS and Android collectively on nearly 93 percent of devices, it seems like a savvy move to get Office into those realms — especially with freemium software that could eventually lead users to pay for Office 365 subscriptions.

And what of Office for Android? Microsoft said that beta testing has already started for Android tablets and that the apps will become available in 2015. It also said that a version for Android phones (with similar features to what exists for iOS) will be available shortly afterward.

On Friday, the mobile version of Word surged to No. 2 among free apps in Apple’s App Store. This comes just one day after Microsoft dropped the requirement of buying an Office 365 subscription to edit documents in the Word app for the Apple iPhone.

International television network A&E has enabled live streaming for two of its most popular channels — A&E and History — through their apps for Apple’s iPad. Users will still be able to access on-demand content including clips and full episodes of past shows.

A cable subscription is required to watch the channels’ live streams. Users will need to authenticate with their cable company, and A&E says the streams are only available to viewers in the United States for now.

The more you use Office on your desktop or laptop, and the closer your ties to Microsoft’s ecosystem, the more you’ll love Office on your iPad. Just remember: it’s a companion to the full-blown Office apps, not a replacement for them.

Analyst Sterne Agee said the game will bring in $30 million in revenue this year, even though it’s available free of charge in the App Store, Business Insider reports. Like other fermium games, Hearthstone comes with in-app purchases which will give users faster access to additional cards – card packs can be purchased using gold won in-game following battles, and after completing quests.

Word, Excel, PowerPoint for iPad are free to download – Microsoft says it’s been downloaded more than 12 million times – but requires an Office 365 subscription (starting from $89/year) to edit, create and save documents.

Sadly, Word hits a wall if you want to print anything: none of the Office for iPad apps work with Apple’s AirPrint wireless printing technology. This is a crippling Achilles heel to an otherwise towering app.

Although Microsoft made its Office for iPad apps free to download for viewing documents, to edit existing or create new documents, spreadsheets and presentations, customers must subscribe to an Office 365 software rent-not-own plan. Those plans can be obtained through a number of non-App Store outlets: Consumers, for example, can purchase a subscription from Microsoft’s website or at retail, while businesses can obtain Office 365 from Microsoft directly or from one of its channel partners.

By building for two years’ worth of Android (as we did originally with 4.0+), you’ll support about 40 percent of the U.S. smartphone install base. Removing 4.0-4.1 support leaves you with one year’s worth of OS compatibility, and that number drops to 12.5 percent.

Apple will continue to take its cut from those subscriptions in upcoming years, as the Office 365 Home plans purchased from within a Microsoft app will be “automatically renew[ed] within 24 hours prior to the end of the current subscription period” and again charged to the customer’s iTunes account.

But what of the conventional wisdom that Android users won’t download apps? We looked at the data and didn’t see it. Android users were less likely to pay for apps, to download games, and to pay for in-app content. But they were certainly downloading. Android had more users globally, and was on track to surpass the iOS installed base in the U.S. (It has since done so.) Android’s UX was improving, and a few high-profile influencers were switching to it from iPhone.

In the year since we moved to Android, it’s become more popular to launch Android-first. And for some products it may very well be the right answer. But consider the trade-offs carefully.  We’ll never know how things would have gone had we stuck with iPhone from the beginning. But here’s my guess: we would have launched our beta in April (not July) and our 1.0 in August (not October). We’d be building more functionality in less time. Our UX would be more polished, we’d have fewer bugs, and our addressable market would actually be larger.

That doesn’t mean Emu will get more users on iPhone; it merely describes the total number of people who can install our app if they want to. We have more specific hypotheses about how switching platforms might affect our ability to reach target users, but they’re still hypotheses. We’ll write more once we see whether our iPhone launch confirms or refutes them.

Microsoft’s new iPad apps are of the so-called “freemium” variety, meaning they require in-app purchases to unlock certain features. In the case of Office for iPad, free features include document viewing, but users need to have an Office 365 subscription to make edits. Existing subscription holders can sign in immediately, though Microsoft also built in a subscription purchasing mechanism in each Office app.

Microsoft also announced some new tools designed to help developers create and deploy touch-centric business apps running on Windows 8.1 Update, which the company began rolling out to Windows 8.1 users last week. Among those tools:

One of the biggest bits of news is that Microsoft is encouraging developers to use whatever tools they want. Whether a developer chooses to use C# or Visual Basic (VB)—or C/C++—to write native apps, it’s all good. Microsoft is also actively encouraging developers to build cross platform apps with JavaScript and HTML5/CSS and has promised an update to Internet Explorer 11 with hardware accelerated graphics support that takes advantage of a device’s GPUs while leaving the CPU untouched.

As noted by MacRumors, Microsoft first suggested it was interested in bringing its Office suite of software to Apple’s iPad in early 2010. Some industry watchers have suggested that Apple’s policy of taking a 30 percent cut of all in-app sales may have delayed the release of Office for iPad. Microsoft may have also been hoping that the unavailability of its Office software on Apple’s iPad would help draw more users to its own beleaguered Surface line of tablets.

“I think Microsoft has taken a substantial step in the right direction with the changes to the cost and availability of side loading keys. Couple this with the increasing maturity of projects like (Magenic’s open-source) OrgPortal and CompanyStore and I think we’re getting to the point where WinRT (the Windows 8 runtime programming interface) is something to consider for business app development,” Lhotka said.

All three flavors of Windows now run on a common software core, or “kernel,” with a common runtime (i.e., the set of tools necessary to run programs). The major remaining differences between them have mostly to do with how they handle user-interface issues across a variety of devices, input methods (think touchscreens vs. mouse and keyboard), hardware (not just CPU and memory, but graphics processors, accelerometers and other sensors) and screen sizes.

It’s too early to tell if Office’s popularity is due to curiosity or if an actual Office 365-paying audience is downloading the apps, though Word for iPad has already cracked Apple’s “Top Grossing” chart. Office for iPad also likely holds great appeal for businesses that are more inclined to sign Office 365 licensing agreements directly with Microsoft, which would be hidden from the App Store; the Office 365 Home subscription found in-app is for personal use only.

It appears pent-up demand for an iPad version of Microsoft’s productivity suite has propelled all three Office for iPad apps — Microsoft Word for iPad, Microsoft Excel for iPad and Microsoft PowerPoint for iPad — to the top of Apple’s iOS App Store for iPad. Microsoft introduced the apps on Thursday.

Who doesn’t like The Daily Show with Jon Stewart? Okay, I shouldn’t ask questions to which I don’t really want the answers. But if you are among the many who enjoy this and other shows on Comedy Central, you can now watch full episodes on your iOS device for free. Many of the shows are completely free to watch, but some require you to log in with your TV provider. If you’re looking for a new racing game but are sick of the usual, you might like DrawRace 2. It’s a top-down racing game with unique controls. Instead of driving with a wheel, you draw your path. If you like if-then statements and linking together web services, then you probably already know about IFTTT. Well, this week they updated this app with some pretty sweet features. Now any recipe can end in a push notification.

Caveman Feast 200 Paleo Recipes [iOS Universal; $2.99] Caveman Feast for iPhone and iPad contains 200 delicious Paleo recipes that are beautifully illustrated and easy to follow. Version 2.0.0 brings the following changes:

AirMusic [iOS Universal; Now free, down from $2.99] Access and stream your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch Music Library directly over WiFi from an Xbox, a PS3 or any compatible DLNA device.

In fact, if anything the chief complaints seem to be that Microsoft didn’t go far enough in creating a functioning Office suite for iPad, with users citing problems such as no Dropbox integration and lack of printing support.
